a close friend emailed me saying I’d like this video a lot. he was dead on. in fact, i LOVE this video. it starts off a bit dry but gets reallllly good about 4 minutes in…
every word pretty much resonates with how I think companies should operate. it’s all about establishing a company culture in which people feel motivated and excited to do work… there’s autonomy and purpose and therefore people inherently experience this feeling of personal fulfillment every day…
“pay people enough to take the issue of money off the table. pay people enough so they’re not thinking about money and they’re thinking about the work.”
the video emphasizes that high incentives lead to higher performance for simple, straightforward tasks. on the contrary, higher incentives DO NOT lead to higher performance when conceptual and creative thinking are required. (YES!)
this makes sense! people will rationalize the return of their time investment in two ways:
1) do I love and believe in the company I’m working with;
2) do I love the work that I’m doing?
a combination of 1 and 2 is ideal but I think the stronger #1 is, the more flexible we’ll be with 2. so long as we enjoy most of the work we’re doing, we’ll be willing to do more mundane tasks too.
as for money, I think those who want to be creative and work their love are driven less by money and more by autonomy, feeling higher purpose and doing work that matters (to them). money is nice… but loving what you do and being rewarded just enough is nicer.
i recently started working with Photojojo on new biz, partnerships and fun collaborations. this video reminds me of them a lot. in fact, I think everything they stand for is epitomized in this video. I consistently feel excited, creative and happy, and the work never feels like a job. it’s instead a part of me that I get to genuinely talk about every day.

Great vid and quite motivating, as well … esp. as a freelancer analyzing my own work ethics and roles.
